A name written on the negative sleeve, "Madam Selva," is the only identifying detail for this portrait, and the Library of Congress has not verified it. The picture belongs to the National Photo Company collection, the commercial studio active in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, whose glass negatives record city life, public figures and visiting performers. Its approximate 1921 date comes from neighboring negatives in the same batch, not from the image itself. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, so they are part of the object's physical history.
