Madam Hanahara is the only subject here, a portrait made on a glass negative dated December 15, 1923, and that single name is what sets this picture apart from the other National Photo Company views on this board. The title comes from notes the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not independently verified it, so the sitter's identity should be read with that caveat. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C. studio that produced large numbers of commercial portraits and news photographs in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates were later donated to the Library. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion coatings over time.
