Georgetown, the riverside neighborhood on the Potomac that predates the federal capital, is the subject of this glass negative from about 1920. The title and date come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negatives or their sleeves, so the exact view and year are not fully confirmed. The company photographed Washington streets, buildings and everyday scenes for sale to a wide public. Glass plates like this one were fragile, and the streaks and blemishes across the surface reflect the natural breakdown of their original coatings over time.
