A June 1924 commencement at Georgetown University, the Jesuit school founded in 1789 in Washington, D.C., is the subject here. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's institutions and public life in the early twentieth century, made the image, and Herbert A. French gave the glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. The title and date come from caption data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the record marks as unverified, and parts of that caption have rubbed away. Streaks and blemishes on the plate are the natural result of deterioration in its original coating.
