Taken on May 10, 1924, this glass negative records a relay in Georgetown, the Washington, D.C., neighborhood that was already an established port town before the federal city was laid out. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, produced large numbers of views of streets, public events and daily life. Because the image survives on glass, it keeps fine detail, though streaks and other blemishes from the deteriorating coating are visible across the plate. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
