The name Charlotte Freeman Clark comes from a label the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification has not been independently confirmed. This 4 by 5 inch glass negative is dated to about 1920, a format common among studio and press photographers of that era. The company was based in Washington, D.C., and its glass plates are known for capturing the city's people and events in the early twentieth century. The surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, a typical sign of glass plates of this age. The Library of Congress received the negative as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
