Ernest E. Clark is named only on this glass negative, so the record gives us a portrait subject and little else. The title and date come from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress lists them as unverified, so the September 7, 1922 date should be read with some caution. The National Photo Company operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing a large body of commercial and news photographs, and this negative belongs to that collection. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
