Clark Griffith, who managed and later owned the Washington Senators, is the subject of this portrait, which the National Photo Company likely made during his years leading the club. Griffith had pitched in the majors before turning to management, and by the mid-1920s he was known as a shrewd baseball man. The Senators won the 1924 World Series, the franchise's first championship, so the picture dates from a memorable stretch for Washington baseball. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which give it a worn, textured look.
