The title, Olive Chase, was written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve, but the Library of Congress has not verified it, so the identity of the sitter remains uncertain. The plate is dated to about 1920, when the Washington, D.C.-based company was producing large numbers of glass-plate portraits and city views. Look closely and you may see streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings rather than from anything done at the time of exposure.
