Identified only by the title "Nathan Perlman of NY," a label the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, this glass plate has not been verified by the Library of Congress. The negative, 4 by 5 inches or smaller, dates to about 1920, when the company's Washington, D.C., studio was producing a large body of portraits and views. Look closely and you may see streaks and faint blemishes, the result of the original coatings deteriorating over the decades since the plate was donated by Herbert A. French in 1947.
