Few 1895 theater posters show a figure in Roman dress standing on steps above a fallen man, one arm raised in a gesture that reads as either triumph or grief. The lithograph was printed in New York by H.A. Thomas and the Wylie Lithograph Company, whose shop on West 24th Street produced many show bills of the period. The title was devised by cataloguers rather than taken from the poster, and the lower right corner is missing. The classical costume and staged tableau reflect the late nineteenth-century American fondness for ancient Rome as theatrical subject matter, where spectacle and pictorial posing drew audiences.
