Billed as the "violets of the stage," the Chapman Sisters are the subject of this large 1870 poster, and its caption singles out Ella Blanche. The sheet is a black-and-white woodcut measuring about 156 by 108 centimeters, big enough to be posted on a wall or fence as a theater bill. It was produced by Ferd. Mayer & Sons, a New York print shop on Fulton Street, and it is signed by the artist Peter Krämer, who lived from 1823 to 1907. The copyright registration the same year gives the sheet a firm date in the history of American stage advertising.
