Underground haulage in Polish coal mines relied on horses and ponies long after railways and tracks reached the workings, and this print pairs the animal with the men who worked beside it. It dates from roughly 1918 to 1921, just after Poland regained independence at the end of the First World War, when the country was rebuilding its industries and its coal output mattered a great deal. The print came from the W.A.F. photographic agency in Warsaw and entered the Library of Congress as part of the Dr. Louis E. Van Norman Collection. Its Polish caption on the reverse is a useful clue to the scene's local setting.
