A color lithograph printed in Cleveland in 1885 reuses the composition of Rosa Bonheur's famous painting of a Paris horse market, turning it into an advertisement for a livestock feed, the H.T. Stock Food Co. Bonheur worked on the canvas in the early 1850s and showed it in Paris, where its crowded, lifelike scene of draft and saddle horses brought her wide acclaim. The poster is a billboard-sized sheet, and it shows how late nineteenth-century American businesses borrowed fine-art images to lend prestige to everyday products. The attribution to Bonheur comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
