Its slogan, "Salvage scrap to blast the Jap," puts the metal drive in direct terms, and the record ties the design to scrap collection in Washington State. The Works Progress Administration's Art Project produced this silkscreen poster around 1940 or 1941, when the United States was building up its military and needed steel and iron for war industry. Silkscreen was one of the cheapest ways to make bright, multicolor posters in quantity, which helped the federal art program send such messages into public buildings and shop windows across the country.
