A gasoline pump and a skull share the frame of this poster, a grim pairing that spells out its warning: don't mix drinking with driving. The Pennsylvania branch of the WPA Federal Art Project issued it, part of a Depression-era program that employed artists to make public-safety posters for display across the country. A date stamp on the back reads March 27, 1937, and the Library of Congress holds it in its Work Projects Administration poster collection. Its flat color and blunt symbols reflect the period's aim of getting a message across to passersby at a glance.
