Devil's Den is the rocky outcropping on the southern edge of the Gettysburg battlefield, and this view shows the jumbled granite boulders and leafless trees that gave the spot its name. During the battle of July 2 to 3, 1863, Confederate sharpshooters and Union troops fought hand to hand among these rocks, which made the ground difficult to cross and nearly impossible to hold in a conventional line. Photographs of the site from the years after the war, when the battlefield was first being surveyed and memorialized, often show the same stones and open road, so the scene gives a sense of how little the terrain has changed.
