Devil's Den is a jumble of granite boulders and scrub trees on the southern end of Little Round Top, and this panorama captures its rough, broken terrain as it looked in 1909, about 46 years after the battle. Fighting raged across these rocks on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, when Confederate sharpshooters and Texas and Alabama troops clashed with Union defenders from the 3rd Maine and 4th Maine and others who held the ridge. Because the boulders offered cover to riflemen on both sides, the position changed hands several times in the fight. Photographs like this one were made as veterans returned to the field and the battlefield was being marked for preservation.
