Ewell's Corps storming the cemetery gate and seizing Ricketts' Battery is the moment this canvas captures, a clash on Cemetery Hill during the first evening of fighting at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The attack came as the Union defenders scrambled to hold the high ground, and the struggle there continued into the gathering dark. Painted sometime between 1865 and 1895, the work shows how artists kept the battle's most dramatic episodes alive in the decades after the war. J.P. Morgan gave the picture to the Library of Congress in 1919.
