Few pictures from Gettysburg show Confederates storming a Union battery, and this one, by Alfred R. Waud, pictures the Louisiana Tigers, a Confederate brigade under Harry Hays, during the evening fighting of July 2, 1863. Waud was a staff artist who worked in the field for illustrated newspapers, and his sketches were turned into engravings for readers who could not see the battle themselves. The drawing's olive paper and layered pencil, white, and ink wash suggest a quick study made on the spot and worked up later. The fighting on that part of the field, near the Union artillery of the 11th Corps, was among the most intense of the battle's second day.
