La Crosse, a small town in LaPorte County in northwestern Indiana, stood in 1915 in a farming region whose markets ran east to South Bend and north toward Chicago. Grain, livestock, and dairy goods moved out by rail, and the town's life followed the depot, the grain elevators, and the shops and churches along its main streets. Across the state line and down the lake, Chicago's rail yards and the new steel works at Gary were pulling workers and capital into the northwest corner of Indiana, so farm families here often looked to those cities for jobs and news. Rural Indiana in these years was also moving toward good roads and automobiles, which slowly changed how far people traveled for church, school, and trade.
