La Crosse, a small town in northwest Indiana's LaPorte County, sat in 1915 among farms that depended on rail lines to reach Chicago's grain elevators, stockyards, and markets. Its residents worked mostly in farming, local trade, and the railroad, and the area's drained marshland had turned into productive cropland over the preceding decades. That spring, news of the war in Europe, now in its first year, reached the town through the same newspapers and rail mail that carried farm produce out. The photograph shows a community that was still small and rural, with its everyday life tied closely to the rail and the farm economy.
