Hindenburg's image is what sets this poster apart from other German war-loan appeals of the period. Paul von Hindenburg, the field marshal who became a national symbol of the war effort, appears alongside the slogan "Die Zeit ist hart, aber der Sieg ist sicher," or "The times are hard, but victory is certain." Germany financed its war partly through repeated public bond drives, and posters like this one asked ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the state. The text is signed "B.P.," and the lithograph was printed in color at a large 141 by 96 centimeters, a size meant for public walls.
