Lettered "Zeichnet 8. Kriegsanleihe," this 1917 color lithograph is a call to subscribe to Austria's eighth war loan, and its figure is identified in the record as an Austrian goddess. The poster was one of many that the Habsburg government commissioned to persuade citizens to lend money to the state during the First World War, when war bonds were a main way to finance the army. Its artist, K. Sterrer, belongs to a generation of Vienna-trained illustrators whose posters often used allegorical figures to turn a financial request into a patriotic duty. The print also offers a window into how wartime finance was sold to ordinary people.
