Here a German savings bank is cast as the country's best investment, with a steel helmet placed among coins to tie the bond drive to the front. Louis Oppenheim's 1917 color lithograph is a Kriegsanleihe, or war loan, poster. Germany financed much of its First World War effort by selling government bonds to its own citizens, and posters like this urged ordinary savers to lend their money to the state. The pairing of money with military imagery shows how the appeal framed financial support as patriotic duty.
