Its title, *Zeichne!*, is German for "Subscribe!", and the record's subjects of pens and certificates point to its purpose: urging Germans to sign up for a war loan. By 1918 Germany was financing the First World War heavily through bonds, and the government ran repeated subscription drives supported by large numbers of posters. Louis Oppenheim, a German graphic artist, made this color lithograph, which reflects the wartime effort to turn ordinary savers into financiers of the war.
