Few posters of the French war effort bring the home front into view as directly as this 1917 call to subscribe to the third National Defense Loan, where mothers and children anchor the appeal. Paul Bruno, the artist who signed the lithograph, was one of many French illustrators whose work supported the government's bond campaigns, which raised money for the war by asking ordinary citizens to lend to the state. The slogan, which urges readers to hasten peace through victory, links personal savings to the hope that the fighting would end. The bright color lithography and family imagery were meant to make a financial request feel like a matter of household duty.
