Few wartime posters tie a grain crop so directly to national survival as this one, which tells French readers to sow wheat because it is "gold for France." The 1918 lithograph pairs a scythe and the tricolor with the idea of the harvest, reflecting a country whose farms had been strained by nearly four years of war and by the occupation of productive land in the north and northeast. Campaigns like this urged farmers to plant and civilians to conserve bread, since grain meant both food and economic security. The poster is signed by Suzanne Ferrand.
