Issued in 1915 by the Committee for Gold of the Rhône department, this color lithograph urges French citizens to "commit your gold for the homeland," a plea that reflected the strain the war placed on national finances. Signed by F.J. Barbier, the poster's imagery includes coins and battlefields, and its subject headings also name German military personnel, a reminder that such campaigns framed the conflict as a struggle against an enemy. Gold drives like this one, which asked people to surrender coins in exchange for paper currency or war bonds, were common across France during the First World War.
