A group of people is gathered under the title "Emergency Hospital," which the National Photo Company wrote on the glass negative, though the record notes that this label is unverified. The company, based in Washington, D.C., made a large body of street, civic and institutional photographs in the early twentieth century, and the city's Emergency Hospital was a central site for treating accident and sudden-illness cases. The date of about 1924 is inferred from neighboring negatives rather than from anything the picture itself shows. Viewers should also expect streaks and small blemishes, which are typical of aging glass plates.
