The storefront at 218 Fifth Avenue, with its 26th Street frontage, stands out from the usual views of landmarks and streets because it shows a working business at the corner of a busy block. The Detroit Photographic Company, which later became the Detroit Publishing Company, was known for broad coverage of American cities and scenery, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates to about 1900. Fifth Avenue was then one of Manhattan's most fashionable commercial streets, lined with shops and studios that served well-to-do customers. The plate was a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
