This stereograph shows the Paris Exposition at night, when the grounds were lit by electric illuminations, a novelty that drew large crowds. The Exposition Universelle of 1900 ran from spring through autumn that year and presented the latest in electric lighting, engineering and design to visitors from around the world. The Eiffel Tower, completed for the 1889 fair, was a central landmark of the city and of the 1900 celebrations. Stereographs like this one were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth in scenes of distant places and events.
