Taken from the heights of Fort Holmes, this view looks down on Fort Mackinac, which guards the harbor of Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. British forces built the original post in the early 1780s, and it passed to the United States after the Revolution. It changed hands again during the War of 1812, when the British captured it and held it until the peace. By the time this glass negative was made, around 1900 to 1905, the island had become a popular summer resort, and the Detroit Publishing Company was recording scenic places like this across the country.
