Fort Mackinac sits on a bluff above the harbor of Mackinac Island in the Straits of Mackinac, and this view was taken from the open pasture that lay below its walls, so the stone works appear framed by grass rather than the town. The print is a photochrom, a process that transferred hand-colored tones onto a photograph, and it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog of scenic views made for tourists arriving by steamer. British and then American garrisons held the fort through the 1800s, and by around 1900 its role as a military post had faded, leaving it a popular destination for visitors touring the island.
