Rather than a plain view of the room, this mezzotint fills the Senate chamber with individual portraits of its members, which sets it apart from simpler architectural views. The faces were engraved from daguerreotype likenesses held by the National Miniature Gallery of Anthony, Clarke & Co., so the print shows how early photographic portraits were turned into engraved pictures for public display. The Senate had met in this room in the Capitol's north wing since 1810 and would move to a new chamber in 1859, so the print records the body in its older home.
