Henry Clay commands the center of this crowded Senate chamber, shown in the year he pressed his great compromise package through the chamber. The Kentucky senator spent much of 1850 seeking to settle disputes over slavery in the lands won from Mexico, and the debates drew packed galleries and intense national attention. Philadelphia painter Peter F. Rothermel created the original composition, and Robert Whitechurch's engraving, published in Philadelphia around 1855, carried the scene to a wide audience. The print is worth studying for its record of how the Senate looked during one of the most divisive stretches before the sectional crisis deepened.
