Few rooms in the Capitol carry as much 1850 history as the Senate chamber shown here. Its semicircular floor, with desks arranged in tiers, was the setting for the debates over the Compromise of 1850, when Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun addressed the chamber on whether slavery would expand into the western territories. The room had been rebuilt after British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, and it served the Senate until 1859, when the body moved into its new chamber. Prints of the period like this one offered citizens a view of the institution at the height of its sectional crisis.
