The Capitol shown here is distinguished by the flags that line its front, a detail that marks it as a ceremonial or celebratory view rather than a plain architectural study. Hand coloring was a common finishing touch on engraved and lithographed views of Washington in the nineteenth century, when printmakers tinted black-and-white plates by hand to make public buildings look more striking. The Capitol itself was still growing during much of that period, with its dome and wings reshaped over decades, so such prints also record a building in transition. Look closely at the sky, the foreground figures and the flags for the small touches of color that give the scene its lively, patriotic character.
