Columbus Circle, where Broadway, Eighth Avenue and Central Park South meet at the edge of Central Park, is the setting for this 1932 lithograph by James Penney. Its subjects are the pedestrians crossing the busy intersection and the newspaper vendors who worked its corners, a common sight in Depression-era New York. Penney belongs to the American realist printmakers who turned everyday city life into their subject during the 1930s. The print is part of the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Foundation Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds many works from that period.
