Inscribed in pencil "To E. Fiene from N. Cikovsky," this lithograph was a personal gift between artists, and its subject is the waterfront rather than the skyline that most New York views favor. The title, *On the East River*, places the scene along the piers and wharves at the city's edge, where men without work gathered in the 1930s as shipping and dock labor dried up during the Depression. Nicolai Cikovsky, a Russian-born painter working in New York during those years, used such scenes of ordinary laborers to show how the economic crisis looked from the street.
