Few advertisers in 1870 could match the pull of a major public works project, and this color lithograph ties the Brooklyn Bridge, then under construction over the East River, to the Empire Sewing Machine Company of New York. Engineer John A. Roebling had designed the bridge and begun work in 1869, but he died that summer from tetanus after an injury at the site. His son Washington took over the project and saw it through to completion in 1883. Printed by Henry Seibert & Bros., a firm known for commercial lithography, the piece shows how manufacturers borrowed the excitement of civic achievement to sell everyday goods.
