Shown from a high vantage point, this steel engraving by W. Ridgway after a drawing by J. Wells maps Charleston and its surrounding harbor. It appeared in the first volume of *The War with the South* in 1862, opposite page 58. Charleston was where secession began and where the Civil War opened when Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, so readers following the conflict would have found a view of its waterfront especially meaningful. The record's attribution of the book's author is uncertain, but the engraving reads as a wartime illustration meant to help readers picture the city's geography.
