A beached hulk is the detail that sets this stereograph apart. The title identifies it as a British-built vessel, one of the fast steamers that Confederate agents bought abroad to run cargo past the Union blockade. The scene was taken on Folly Island, a barrier island just south of Charleston that Union forces had occupied as a staging ground during the long campaign against the city. Its two nearly identical plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, a popular way to bring distant war scenes into parlors.
