San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1919 was a port city about two decades into American rule, after the island passed from Spain to the United States following the war of 1898. Sugar and tobacco drove the export economy, and ships carrying those crops and coffee moved through the harbor below the old Spanish fortifications. The Jones Act of 1917 had made Puerto Ricans American citizens, a change that shaped local politics and drew more mainland visitors to the capital. The influenza epidemic that struck the island in late 1918 had only recently eased, leaving hospitals and businesses still recovering. A hotel like the Palace, shown here, would have catered to the travelers, officials, and merchants who made San Juan the island's main gateway.
