Acrobats performing on horseback are the subject of this tall color poster, printed in Buffalo, New York, in 1870 by Warren, Johnson & Co. The record credits the design to an artist signed Morse, but that attribution comes from an older caption card and has not been verified. Circus posters of this era were often color woodcuts built from several inked blocks, and printers produced them to advertise traveling shows to passersby on city streets and barn walls. At roughly 80 by 41 inches, this sheet shows how dramatically such advertisements were scaled to draw a crowd.
