Standing about 204 centimeters tall and printed in color from woodcut blocks, this 1870 poster advertises acrobats performing on horseback, a popular feature of the traveling circus in the years after the Civil War. The Buffalo firm Warren, Johnson & Co. was among the printers who produced such bills in quantity for touring shows, and the caption card credits a Morse, though that attribution is unverified. Note how each color had to be carved into a separate block and carefully aligned, and how the bold shapes were meant to catch the eye from across a street.
