A tall color woodcut poster of acrobats performing on horseback, the record gives its size as about 204 by 104 centimeters, large enough to be read from across a street. Its imprint names Buffalo and the firm of Warren, Johnson & Co. in 1870, and the record credits a signature reading "Morse," though that attribution comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. In the 1870s, circus bills were among the most visible printed advertisements, and printers often used bold color and dramatic action to draw crowds. Woodcut was a less common method for such posters than lithography, which makes this example worth a closer look.
