The Legislature of Mississippi in the mid-1870s met during Reconstruction, a period when the state's government was being rebuilt after the Civil War and Black men had gained the vote and seats in statehouses across the South. Group portraits like this one, taken of a whole legislative body, were a common way of recording the men who held office at a given moment. Viewers today often study such images for the composition of the assembly and the clothing and bearing of its members, while also noting how quickly the political makeup of these bodies changed once Reconstruction ended in the late 1870s.
