The rebel position at Vicksburg, Mississippi, drawn in May 1863, shows the river fortress that Union forces spent months trying to take during the Civil War. Vicksburg sat on high bluffs above a sharp bend of the Mississippi River, and whoever held it controlled the river traffic between the Confederate states west of the Mississippi and the rest of the South. Maps like this one were made to guide Union commanders through the siege, marking Confederate earthworks, batteries and approach routes. The siege ended with the city's surrender on July 4, 1863, a turning point that gave the Union full control of the river.
