The Vicksburg National Military Park is the setting here, and this 1925 view maps the lines of siege and defense that ringed the city during the 1863 campaign. Vicksburg sat on high bluffs above the Mississippi River, and holding it gave the Confederacy control of the river; Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant spent weeks encircling the town before its surrender on July 4, 1863. The national cemetery visible in the background holds the graves of many Union soldiers who died in the siege and its aftermath. Pictures like this one, drawn to show the earthworks and approaches rather than the landscape itself, help visitors trace how the battle unfolded across the ground.
